Description

Agapanthus Durban – Deciduous African Lily

Agapanthus Durban is a compact deciduous African Lily producing attractive rounded umbels of deep dark blue flowers throughout mid to late summer. The vibrant blooms are carried on sturdy upright stems above broad dark green leaves, creating a striking contrast that brings colour, structure and architectural interest to borders, containers and mixed perennial plantings. Its rich flower colour and manageable size make it an excellent choice for gardens of all sizes.

Growing to approximately 60cm in height, Agapanthus Durban forms neat clumps of foliage that remain attractive throughout the growing season. The abundant flowers attract bees and other pollinating insects, helping to support garden wildlife while providing weeks of long-lasting colour. Its compact habit makes it particularly suitable for the front of borders, patio displays and decorative containers where the flowers can be appreciated at close range. The blooms also make attractive cut flowers for indoor arrangements.

Growing Agapanthus Durban

Agapanthus Durban thrives in a sunny position with fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Full sun encourages abundant flowering and helps produce sturdy stems capable of supporting the flower heads. Once established, plants are relatively easy to grow and benefit from regular watering during prolonged dry periods. Good drainage is essential, particularly during winter months.

As a deciduous variety, the foliage naturally dies back in autumn before fresh growth emerges in spring. Remove spent flower stems after flowering and cut back old foliage once it has yellowed completely. Applying a protective mulch during winter can help protect the crown in colder areas and encourage vigorous growth the following season.
