Description

Agapanthus Ankara – Deciduous African Lily

Agapanthus Ankara is a beautiful deciduous African Lily producing large rounded flower heads packed with rich deep blue blooms throughout the summer months. Held on strong upright stems above neat clumps of fresh green strap-like foliage, the flowers create a bold display of colour and structure in borders, containers and mixed perennial planting schemes. The intense blue flowers provide a striking focal point and blend beautifully with ornamental grasses and other summer-flowering perennials.

Growing to approximately 50–60cm in height, Agapanthus Ankara combines reliable flowering with excellent garden performance. The impressive flower heads rise proudly above the foliage, attracting bees and other pollinating insects while providing weeks of long-lasting seasonal interest. Furthermore, its elegant upright habit makes it suitable for both traditional cottage gardens and contemporary planting designs.

Growing Agapanthus Ankara

Agapanthus Ankara thrives in a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil. Full sun encourages abundant flowering and helps develop the richest flower colour. Additionally, regular watering during prolonged dry periods will encourage the best floral display and maintain healthy growth throughout the season. Container-grown plants perform exceptionally well and often flower more freely when slightly root restricted.

As a deciduous variety, the foliage naturally dies back in autumn before fresh growth emerges in spring. Remove spent flower stems after flowering and cut back old foliage once it has completely died down. Furthermore, applying a winter mulch can help protect the crown during colder weather and encourage vigorous regrowth the following season. In exposed areas, additional winter protection may be beneficial for younger plants.
