Description
Agapanthus Black Buddhist – Deciduous African Lily
Agapanthus Black Buddhist is a spectacular deciduous African Lily renowned for its exceptionally dark flowers and striking architectural presence. Large rounded umbels of deep purple-blue to near-black trumpet-shaped blooms are carried on dramatic dark purple-black stems above clumps of rich green strap-like foliage. Each flower features a darker stripe running through the centre of the petals, adding further depth and intensity to the display. One of the darkest Agapanthus varieties available, it creates a bold focal point in any sunny garden.
Growing to approximately 80–100cm in height, Agapanthus Black Buddhist produces sturdy flower stems that rise well above the foliage during mid to late summer. The near-black buds gradually open to reveal richly coloured blooms that attract bees and other pollinating insects. Its dramatic colouring contrasts beautifully with silver foliage plants, ornamental grasses and lighter flowering perennials, making it an excellent choice for contemporary and traditional planting schemes alike.

Growing Agapanthus Black Buddhist
Agapanthus Black Buddhist thrives in a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil. Full sun encourages the strongest flower colour and helps develop sturdy stems capable of supporting the large flower heads. Once established, plants are relatively drought tolerant, although occasional watering during prolonged dry periods will encourage the best flowering performance. Good drainage is particularly important during winter months.
As a deciduous variety, the foliage naturally dies back in autumn before fresh growth emerges in spring. Remove spent flower stems after flowering and cut back old foliage once it has completely died down. Applying a protective winter mulch in colder areas will help protect the crown and encourage vigorous growth the following season. Container-grown plants perform exceptionally well and allow the dramatic flowers to be appreciated at close range.
