Description

Agapanthus Big Ben – Evergreen African Lily

Agapanthus Big Ben is a spectacular evergreen African Lily renowned for its exceptionally large dark blue flower heads and impressive stature. The huge rounded umbels can reach up to 15 inches (38cm) in diameter, creating a dramatic display of rich colour throughout the summer months. Held on very sturdy upright stems above broad green strap-like foliage, the flowers bring outstanding architectural interest and elegance to borders, courtyard gardens and large patio containers.

Growing to approximately 140cm in height, Agapanthus Big Ben is one of the more imposing Agapanthus varieties, making it ideal as a focal point in sunny planting schemes. The impressive flower heads attract bees and other pollinating insects while providing weeks of long-lasting colour. Its bold habit combines beautifully with ornamental grasses, exotic-style planting and contemporary garden designs.

Growing Agapanthus Big Ben

Agapanthus Big Ben thrives in a sunny, sheltered position with fertile, well-drained soil. Full sun encourages abundant flowering and helps produce the strong stems required to support the enormous flower heads. Once established, plants are relatively drought tolerant, although regular watering during prolonged dry periods will encourage the best floral display. Well-drained soil is essential, particularly during winter months.

As an evergreen variety, the attractive foliage remains throughout the year in mild areas. Remove spent flower stems after flowering and tidy away damaged leaves in spring. In colder regions, container-grown plants should be moved to a sheltered location or protected during severe frosts to ensure reliable performance year after year.
