Description

Agapanthus Ballerina – Deciduous African Lily

Agapanthus Ballerina is a graceful deciduous African Lily producing elegant rounded flower heads filled with soft blue blooms throughout the summer months. The flowers are carried on slender yet sturdy upright stems above neat clumps of fresh green strap-like foliage, creating a light and airy display that brings movement, colour and architectural interest to borders, containers and mixed perennial planting schemes. Its delicate appearance belies a reliable and robust garden performance.

Growing to approximately 90–110cm in height, Agapanthus Ballerina combines elegance with dependable flowering. Furthermore, the attractive flower heads rise above the foliage to create a striking focal point while attracting bees and other beneficial pollinators. Its refined habit makes it particularly well suited to cottage gardens, contemporary landscapes and decorative patio displays where the flowers can be appreciated at close range.

Growing Agapanthus Ballerina

Agapanthus Ballerina thrives in a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil. Full sun encourages abundant flowering and helps develop the best flower colour. Additionally, container-grown plants perform exceptionally well and often flower more freely when slightly root restricted. Once established, plants are relatively drought tolerant, although regular watering during prolonged dry periods will encourage the best floral display.

As a deciduous variety, the foliage naturally dies back in autumn before fresh growth emerges in spring. Remove spent flower stems after flowering and cut back old foliage once it has completely died down. Furthermore, applying a winter mulch can help protect the crown during colder weather and encourage vigorous regrowth the following season. Deciduous Agapanthus varieties are among the hardiest forms, making them particularly well suited to UK gardens.
