Description
Agapanthus Inapertus Lydenburg – Deciduous African Lily
Agapanthus Inapertus Lydenburg is one of the most beautiful and distinctive deciduous African Lilies, producing elegant pendulous flowers in rich deep violet-blue shades. Unlike traditional Agapanthus varieties with rounded upright flower heads, this exceptional cultivar bears graceful tubular blooms that hang naturally from tall stems, creating a softer and more refined appearance. Flowering from mid to late summer, the long-lasting flowers rise above neat clumps of fresh green strap-like foliage, bringing colour, movement and architectural interest to borders and container displays. The striking nodding flowers are among the most attractive of all deciduous Agapanthus cultivars.
Growing to approximately 100–150cm in height, Agapanthus Inapertus Lydenburg creates an impressive vertical accent in mixed borders, prairie-style plantings and contemporary garden designs. The tall stems sway gently in the breeze, adding texture and movement while attracting bees and other pollinating insects. Its combination of elegant flower form, strong garden performance and exceptional flower colour makes it a favourite among Agapanthus enthusiasts.

Growing Agapanthus Inapertus Lydenburg
Agapanthus Inapertus Lydenburg thrives in a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil. Full sun encourages the strongest flowering performance and helps produce sturdy stems capable of supporting the graceful flower heads. Once established, plants are relatively drought tolerant and require only moderate watering during prolonged dry periods. Well-drained soil is essential, particularly during winter.
As a deciduous variety, the foliage dies back completely in autumn before fresh growth emerges in spring. Remove spent flower stems and old foliage at the end of the growing season. A generous mulch of garden compost applied during winter will help maintain healthy growth and encourage abundant flowering in the following year.
