Description
Agapanthus Black Magic – Deciduous African Lily
Agapanthus Black Magic is a striking deciduous African Lily renowned for its rich dark indigo-purple flowers and elegant pendulous habit. Unlike traditional Agapanthus varieties with upright flower heads, this distinctive cultivar produces graceful tubular blooms that hang naturally from tall stems, creating a softer and more refined appearance. Flowering throughout summer, the deep indigo-purple flowers bring dramatic colour and architectural interest to borders, containers and contemporary garden designs.
Growing to approximately 80–120cm in height, Agapanthus Black Magic forms attractive clumps of narrow green strap-like foliage that provide the perfect backdrop for its richly coloured blooms. The flowers sway gently in the breeze, adding movement and texture to the garden while attracting bees and other beneficial pollinators. Its unusual flower form and intense colouring make it a standout specimen for gardeners seeking something truly distinctive.

Growing Agapanthus Black Magic
Agapanthus Black Magic thrives in a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil. Full sun encourages abundant flowering and helps develop the richest flower colour. Once established, plants are relatively drought tolerant, although regular watering during prolonged dry periods will encourage the best floral display. Good drainage is essential, particularly during winter months.
As a deciduous variety, the foliage naturally dies back in autumn before fresh growth emerges in spring. Remove spent flower stems after flowering and cut back old foliage once it has completely died down. A winter mulch will help protect the crown in colder areas and encourage vigorous regrowth the following season. Container-grown plants perform exceptionally well and allow the elegant flowers to be appreciated at close range on patios and terraces.
