Description
Agapanthus Campanulatus subsp. Patens – Deciduous African Lily
Agapanthus Campanulatus subsp. Patens is a beautiful species of deciduous African Lily native to the higher elevations of South Africa. It is particularly valued for its elegant deep blue flowers, which are carried in rounded clusters above slender stems during summer. Smaller and more delicate in appearance than many modern hybrids, this charming species brings a natural grace to borders, gravel gardens and meadow-style planting schemes. Its rich blue blooms attract bees and other pollinating insects while providing weeks of vibrant seasonal colour.
Growing to approximately 60–100cm in height, Agapanthus Campanulatus subsp. Patens forms neat clumps of narrow grey-green foliage that die back in winter before re-emerging in spring. The flower stems rise well above the foliage, creating a light and airy display that blends beautifully with ornamental grasses and other summer-flowering perennials. Its hardiness and reliability make it an excellent choice for gardens throughout the UK.

Growing Agapanthus Campanulatus subsp. Patens
Agapanthus Campanulatus subsp. Patens thrives in a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil. Full sun encourages abundant flowering and helps produce strong stems capable of supporting the flower heads. Once established, plants are relatively drought tolerant, although regular watering during prolonged dry periods will encourage the best floral display.
As a deciduous species, the foliage naturally dies back in autumn before fresh growth emerges in spring. Remove spent flower stems after flowering and apply a mulch in late autumn to help protect the crown during particularly cold winters. This hardy species performs equally well in borders and large containers, where its elegant flowers can be appreciated at close range.
