Description

Agapanthus Calimero – Deciduous African Lily

Agapanthus Calimero is a charming compact deciduous African Lily producing rounded flower heads filled with elegant violet-blue blooms. The flowers are carried on sturdy upright stems above clumps of broad dark green foliage, creating a colourful display during late summer. Its compact size makes it particularly well suited to smaller gardens, patio containers and the front of sunny borders, where its rich flower colour can be fully appreciated. Based on RHS records, it is a clump-forming deciduous cultivar with blue flowers and an attractive upright habit.

Growing to approximately 15-30cm in height, Agapanthus Calimero combines excellent garden performance with a neat, manageable habit. Furthermore, the nectar-rich flowers attract bees and other beneficial pollinators, helping to support garden wildlife throughout the flowering season. The compact flower stems and long-lasting blooms also make it a valuable choice for decorative patio displays and mixed perennial plantings.

Growing Agapanthus Calimero

Agapanthus Calimero thrives in a sunny position with fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Full sun encourages abundant flowering and helps produce strong stems capable of supporting the flower heads. Additionally, container-grown plants perform exceptionally well and benefit from good drainage and regular feeding during the growing season. Deciduous Agapanthus varieties are generally among the hardier forms and perform reliably in UK gardens when planted in a sheltered position.

As a deciduous variety, the foliage naturally dies back in autumn before fresh growth emerges in spring. Remove spent flower stems after flowering and cut back old foliage once it has completely yellowed. Furthermore, applying a winter mulch can help protect the crown during colder weather and encourage vigorous regrowth the following season.
