Description

Agapanthus Blue Imp – Deciduous African Lily

Agapanthus Blue Imp is a charming deciduous African Lily valued for its compact habit and vibrant steel-blue flowers. During midsummer, sturdy upright stems rise above neat clumps of narrow green foliage, carrying rounded flower heads packed with intense blue trumpet-shaped blooms. Its manageable size makes it an excellent choice for smaller gardens, patio containers and the front of sunny borders, where its vivid flower colour can be fully appreciated.

Growing to approximately 30–50cm in height, Agapanthus Blue Imp combines reliable flowering with strong garden performance. The striking flower heads create a bold splash of colour throughout the summer months while attracting bees and other beneficial pollinators. Its elegant form blends beautifully with ornamental grasses, silver-leaved plants and other summer-flowering perennials, making it a versatile addition to a wide range of planting schemes.

Growing Agapanthus Blue Imp

Agapanthus Blue Imp thrives in a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil. Full sun encourages abundant flowering and helps develop the rich blue colouring of the blooms. Once established, plants are relatively drought tolerant, although regular watering during prolonged dry periods will encourage the best floral display. Good drainage is particularly important during winter months.

As a deciduous variety, the foliage naturally dies back in autumn before fresh growth emerges in spring. Remove spent flower stems after flowering and tidy away old foliage once it has completely died back. A winter mulch can provide additional protection in colder areas and help encourage vigorous regrowth the following season. Container-grown plants perform exceptionally well and are easily moved if additional winter protection is required.
