Description
Agapanthus Bressingham Blue – Deciduous African Lily
Agapanthus Bressingham Blue is one of the finest and most enduring deciduous African Lily cultivars, admired for its exceptionally rich deep violet-blue flowers and excellent garden performance. Introduced by the renowned plantsman Alan Bloom, this classic variety produces compact yet densely packed flower heads carried on sturdy upright stems above neat clumps of green strap-like foliage. The intense flower colour remains one of the deepest and most striking among hardy Agapanthus varieties.
Growing to approximately 70–80cm in height, Agapanthus Bressingham Blue combines elegant proportions with abundant flowering. The rounded flower heads appear throughout summer, bringing vibrant colour and architectural interest to borders, gravel gardens and patio containers. The nectar-rich blooms attract bees and other pollinating insects, while the strong stems make excellent cut flowers for indoor arrangements. Its proven hardiness and reliability have helped maintain its popularity for decades.

Growing Agapanthus Bressingham Blue
Agapanthus Bressingham Blue thrives in a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil. Full sun encourages abundant flowering and helps develop the richest flower colour. Once established, plants are relatively drought tolerant, although regular watering during prolonged dry periods will encourage the best floral display. Good drainage is essential, particularly during winter months.
As a deciduous variety, the foliage naturally dies back in autumn before fresh growth emerges in spring. Remove spent flower stems after flowering and tidy away old foliage once it has completely died down. A winter mulch can provide additional protection in colder areas, although this cultivar is regarded as one of the hardier Agapanthus varieties available.
