Description
Vinca minor Ralph Shugart
Vinca minor Ralph Shugart is an attractive evergreen ground cover perennial valued for its glossy green leaves edged with bright golden-yellow margins. This low-growing variety quickly forms a dense mat of colourful foliage, making it ideal for suppressing weeds and brightening difficult areas of the garden. During spring and early summer, masses of violet-blue flowers appear above the foliage, creating a beautiful contrast against the variegated leaves. Growing to around 10cm in height, it is particularly useful for borders, woodland gardens, banks and shaded planting schemes.
Why Choose Vinca minor Ralph Shugart?
The combination of colourful evergreen foliage and attractive blue flowers provides year-round garden interest. As a result, this variety is an excellent choice for covering bare ground beneath trees and shrubs. Furthermore, the variegated foliage helps brighten shaded areas where many plants struggle to thrive. Unlike some vigorous ground covers, it forms a manageable carpet of growth while remaining easy to maintain.
Growing Vinca minor Ralph Shugart
For best results, plant Vinca minor Ralph Shugart in full sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil. During the first growing season, regular watering will encourage strong root development and rapid establishment. However, once established, plants are relatively drought tolerant and require little attention. In addition, incorporating organic matter before planting will help improve soil structure and support healthy growth.
Perfect for Ground Cover and Shaded Areas
Whether planted beneath trees, along pathways or in woodland-style gardens, this variety provides dependable evergreen coverage throughout the year. Meanwhile, the low-growing habit helps reduce weed growth while creating an attractive carpet of foliage. Because of its versatility, it also performs well on slopes and banks where erosion control is required.
Care and Maintenance
Maintenance is simple and suitable for gardeners of all experience levels. Trim back any unwanted growth in spring to maintain shape and encourage fresh foliage. Additionally, applying a light mulch around newly planted specimens will help retain moisture and support establishment. With minimal care, plants will provide many years of reliable garden performance.
