Description
Dicksonia antarctica – Soft Tree Fern
Dicksonia antarctica, commonly known as the Soft Tree Fern, is one of the most impressive and sought-after architectural plants for shaded gardens. Native to the cool, moist forests of south-east Australia and Tasmania, this magnificent evergreen fern produces a crown of graceful arching fronds that create a lush, tropical appearance throughout the year.
These young starter plants are supplied in 9cm pots and will gradually develop into stunning specimens when planted in suitable conditions. Although the trunk grows slowly, typically adding only a few centimetres each year, the elegant fronds can eventually reach up to 2.4 metres in length, creating a dramatic focal point in woodland gardens, shaded borders and fern collections.
Why Grow Dicksonia antarctica?
This beautiful tree fern thrives in damp, sheltered locations where its fronds can unfurl undisturbed. Furthermore, it combines exceptionally well with Hostas, Ferns, Rodgersia and other shade-loving plants, helping to create a natural woodland atmosphere in the garden.
