Description
Hosta Reverend Mac
Hosta Reverend Mac is a distinctive medium-sized hosta introduced to celebrate the birthday of the renowned Northern Irish plantsman, flower designer and author Rev. W. McMillan MBE. This attractive variety forms a neat mound of broad ovate blue-green leaves that provide excellent texture and colour throughout the growing season. During summer, elegant light lavender flowers rise above the foliage, creating a beautiful display in shaded borders, woodland gardens and patio containers. It is a reliable and vigorous garden plant that performs exceptionally well in a wide range of garden settings.
Why Choose Hosta Reverend Mac?
This attractive hosta is valued for its handsome blue-green foliage and dependable garden performance. Furthermore, the broad leaves create a lush, architectural effect that helps bring structure and interest to shaded areas. As a result, Hosta Reverend Mac makes an excellent specimen plant or companion for ferns, heucheras and other shade-loving perennials.
Growing Hosta Reverend Mac
For best results, grow Hosta Reverend Mac in partial shade or full shade in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Regular watering during dry periods will help maintain healthy foliage and vigorous growth. Once established, this hardy perennial forms a medium-sized clump that returns reliably each spring and becomes increasingly impressive with age.
Beautiful Blue-Green Foliage
The broad ovate leaves display an attractive blue-green colouring that remains appealing throughout the growing season. In addition, the foliage develops into a tidy mound that provides excellent contrast against finer-textured plants. Consequently, this variety is particularly effective in woodland planting schemes and shaded mixed borders.
Summer Flowers
In midsummer, light lavender flowers appear on upright stems above the foliage. These elegant blooms add seasonal interest and complement the cool tones of the leaves. Moreover, the flowers attract pollinating insects, bringing additional wildlife value to the garden.
Care and Maintenance
Hosta Reverend Mac is easy to grow and requires very little maintenance. Remove spent flower stems after flowering and tidy away old foliage in autumn or early spring. Applying a mulch each year will help conserve moisture and improve soil quality. Protect emerging shoots from slugs and snails during spring to maintain the best possible foliage display.
