Description
Hosta Holar Ice Empress
Hosta Holar Ice Empress is an outstanding medium to large hosta bred from the impressive cross of Hosta ‘Empress Wu’ and Hosta ‘Mr. Blue’. This exceptional variety produces large icy blue leaves with striking purple petioles, creating a dramatic and elegant display in shaded borders, woodland gardens and container plantings. Throughout summer, attractive light lavender flowers are carried on sturdy purple-tinged flower scapes above the foliage, adding further seasonal interest and attracting pollinators to the garden.
Plants leaves are cut back from August and will reappear late Spring.
Why Choose Hosta Holar Ice Empress?
The beautiful icy blue foliage gives this variety a cool, sophisticated appearance that stands out among traditional green-leaved hostas. As a result, it creates a striking focal point in shaded planting schemes. Furthermore, the purple petioles and flower stems provide additional colour contrast, making the plant attractive even before flowering begins. Its impressive parentage combines excellent foliage substance with strong garden performance.
Growing Hosta Holar Ice Empress
For best results, plant Hosta Holar Ice Empress in partial shade or dappled shade in fertile, moisture-retentive soil. Regular watering during dry periods will help maintain the best foliage colour and encourage vigorous growth. However, good drainage remains important during winter months. In addition, incorporating organic matter into the soil before planting will help improve moisture retention and support healthy root development.
Perfect for Borders and Woodland Gardens
Whether planted as a specimen hosta or combined with ferns, heucheras and other shade-loving perennials, this variety provides dependable colour and texture throughout the growing season. Meanwhile, the large icy blue leaves create a bold architectural effect in woodland-style gardens. Because of its medium to large mature size, it works particularly well as a feature plant in shaded areas.
Care and Maintenance
Maintenance is straightforward and suitable for gardeners of all experience levels. Remove old foliage in late autumn or early spring to encourage fresh growth. Additionally, applying a mulch each spring will help retain moisture and improve soil quality. With minimal attention, plants will provide years of reliable performance and increasing garden presence.
