Description
Hosta Empress Wu® Single Division
Hosta Empress Wu® is widely regarded as one of the largest hostas ever introduced, producing enormous dark green leaves with deep veining and exceptional substance. Bred by Brian and Virginia Skaggs in the USA, this magnificent giant hosta forms an impressive architectural specimen for shaded borders and woodland gardens. Over time, plants can reach approximately 1.35 metres in height with an even greater spread, while elegant pale lavender flowers are carried on towering flower scapes reaching up to 1.5 metres. This outstanding variety creates a dramatic focal point and is highly sought after by hosta enthusiasts and collectors.
Plants leaves are cut back from August and will reappear late Spring.
Why Choose Hosta Empress Wu®?
The sheer size of Hosta Empress Wu® makes it one of the most impressive foliage plants available for shade gardens. As a result, it provides a bold architectural presence that few other perennials can match. Furthermore, the huge dark green leaves have excellent substance, helping them withstand adverse weather while maintaining their attractive appearance throughout the growing season. The deeply veined foliage creates outstanding texture and visual interest from spring until autumn.
Growing Hosta Empress Wu®
For best results, plant Hosta Empress Wu® in partial shade or dappled shade with fertile, moisture-retentive soil. Regular watering during dry periods will help maintain healthy foliage and encourage vigorous growth. However, good drainage remains important, particularly during winter. In addition, incorporating plenty of organic matter before planting will improve soil structure and support strong root development. Given sufficient space and time, plants develop into spectacular specimen clumps.
Perfect for Large Borders and Woodland Gardens
Whether planted as a standalone specimen or combined with ferns, astilbes and other shade-loving perennials, this variety provides outstanding structure and presence. Meanwhile, the giant mound of foliage creates a dramatic backdrop for smaller hostas and woodland plants. Because of its eventual size, Hosta Empress Wu® is best positioned where it has room to develop its full potential.
Care and Maintenance
Maintenance is straightforward and suitable for gardeners of all experience levels. Remove old foliage in late autumn or early spring to encourage fresh growth. Additionally, applying a mulch each spring will help conserve moisture and improve soil quality. With minimal attention, plants will continue to increase in size and become even more impressive with age.
