Description
Hosta Swamp Thing
Hosta Swamp Thing is a distinctive medium-sized hosta bred by renowned plantsman Tony Avent. This vigorous Hosta yingeri hybrid forms an impressive mound of very glossy dark green leaves edged with a broad creamy-yellow to golden-yellow margin that gradually softens towards cream or white as the season progresses. The attractive ovate leaves have gently wavy edges and excellent substance, creating a bold display in shaded gardens. Deep purple, spider-like flowers are produced on upright stems during summer, adding further ornamental value to this unusual and eye-catching variety.
Plants leaves are cut back from August and will reappear late Spring.
Why Choose Hosta Swamp Thing?
Hosta Swamp Thing stands out for its exceptionally glossy foliage and strong colour contrast. Furthermore, the wide variegated margins help brighten shaded borders and woodland gardens throughout the growing season. As a result, this variety makes an excellent specimen plant and combines beautifully with ferns, heucheras and other shade-loving perennials.
Growing Hosta Swamp Thing
For best results, grow Hosta Swamp Thing in partial shade or light shade in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Regular watering during dry periods will encourage lush growth and maintain the quality of the foliage. Once established, this hardy perennial develops into a vigorous clump approximately 30–45cm tall with a spread that can exceed 100cm at maturity. Consequently, it becomes an increasingly impressive garden feature each year.
Beautiful Foliage and Flowers
The highly glossy dark green leaves with their broad creamy-yellow margins provide season-long interest. In addition, deep purple spider-like flowers appear during summer and are particularly attractive against the colourful foliage. The unusual flower shape and rich colouring add another dimension to this already outstanding hosta.
Perfect for Shade Gardens and Containers
This attractive hosta performs exceptionally well in woodland gardens, shaded borders and large patio containers. Moreover, its bold foliage creates excellent contrast with finer-textured plants. Therefore, Hosta Swamp Thing is ideal for gardeners looking to add texture, colour and structure to shaded areas of the garden.
Care and Maintenance
Hosta Swamp Thing is easy to grow and requires little maintenance once established. Remove faded flower stems after flowering and clear away old foliage in autumn or early spring. In addition, an annual mulch will help conserve moisture and improve soil quality. Protect emerging shoots from slugs and snails during spring for the best display.
