Description

Hosta Queen of the Seas

Hosta Queen of the Seas is a magnificent large blue hosta renowned for its heavily rippled, piecrust-edged foliage and impressive upright habit. This award-winning variety produces thick heart-shaped blue-green leaves with deeply serrated margins that create exceptional texture and movement throughout the growing season. The foliage emerges with an intense blue colouring in spring before gradually maturing to blue-green later in the season. Elegant near-white to pale lavender flowers appear on tall stems in early summer, adding further beauty to this outstanding shade garden perennial.

Plants leaves are cut back from August and will reappear late Spring.

Why Choose Hosta Queen of the Seas?

Hosta Queen of the Seas is widely regarded as one of the finest blue hostas available. Furthermore, the heavily rippled foliage creates a dramatic architectural effect that makes an excellent focal point in shaded borders and woodland gardens. The thick leaves have excellent substance and are often noted for their improved resistance to slug damage compared with many thinner-leaved varieties. As a result, this variety remains a favourite among hosta collectors and garden designers alike.

Spectacular Blue Foliage

The large pointed heart-shaped leaves are heavily corrugated and feature distinctive piecrust margins that give the plant its unique character. In addition, the slightly cupped leaves reveal lighter undersides, adding depth and contrast to the overall display. The impressive foliage mound becomes increasingly attractive as the plant matures, creating a truly majestic garden specimen.

Growing Hosta Queen of the Seas

For best results, grow Hosta Queen of the Seas in partial shade or full shade in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Regular watering during dry periods will help maintain healthy foliage and strong growth. Once established, this hardy perennial forms a substantial clump reaching approximately 60cm tall and up to 120cm wide, making it ideal for larger planting schemes.

Perfect for Shade Gardens

This impressive hosta combines beautifully with ferns, astilbes, heucheras and other shade-loving perennials. Moreover, its bold blue foliage provides excellent contrast against finer-textured plants. Therefore, Hosta Queen of the Seas is ideal for woodland gardens, shaded borders, specimen planting and large patio containers.

Care and Maintenance

Hosta Queen of the Seas is easy to grow and requires little maintenance once established. Remove spent flower stems after flowering and clear away old foliage in autumn or early spring. Applying an annual mulch will help conserve moisture and improve soil quality. Protect emerging shoots from slugs and snails during spring for the best display.
