Description
Agapanthus Inapertus Blue Steel – Deciduous African Lily
Agapanthus Inapertus Blue Steel is an elegant deciduous African Lily prized for its unique pendulous steel-blue flowers that hang gracefully from tall, slender stems. Unlike traditional Agapanthus varieties with rounded flower heads, this distinctive cultivar produces clusters of drooping tubular blooms, creating a softer and more natural appearance in the garden. Flowering from mid to late summer, the striking blooms rise above clumps of attractive green strap-like foliage, providing exceptional colour and architectural interest.
Growing to approximately 80–100cm in height, Agapanthus Inapertus Blue Steel makes a dramatic addition to mixed borders, prairie-style plantings and contemporary garden designs. The unusual steel-blue flowers sway gently in the breeze, adding movement and texture to the landscape while attracting bees and other pollinating insects. Its upright habit and long flowering period make it a valuable feature plant for sunny gardens.

Growing Agapanthus Inapertus Blue Steel
Agapanthus Inapertus Blue Steel thrives in a sunny, sheltered position with fertile, well-drained soil. Full sun encourages the strongest flowering performance and enhances the intensity of the flower colour. Once established, plants are relatively drought tolerant and require little maintenance beyond removing spent flower stems after flowering.
Container-grown specimens perform particularly well and can be positioned on patios and terraces where the elegant flowers can be appreciated at close range. As a deciduous variety, the foliage naturally dies back in autumn before fresh growth emerges in spring. Applying a mulch during winter can provide additional protection in colder areas and help maintain healthy plants year after year.
