Description
Agapanthus Inapertus Black Magic – Deciduous African Lily
Agapanthus Inapertus Black Magic is one of the darkest and most distinctive African Lilies available, producing spectacular pendulous tubular flowers in rich indigo-black shades throughout summer. The unusual blooms hang gracefully from tall stems, creating a dramatic architectural display unlike traditional Agapanthus varieties. Flower buds emerge almost black before opening to reveal deep purple-black flowers that appear nearly black in certain light conditions. This striking deciduous cultivar is highly prized by gardeners looking to add bold colour and structure to borders and container displays.
Growing to approximately 80–100cm in height, Agapanthus Inapertus Black Magic forms neat clumps of attractive green strap-like foliage that provide an excellent backdrop for its dramatic flowers. The distinctive drooping blooms are characteristic of the Agapanthus inapertus group and create an elegant, natural appearance in mixed borders, gravel gardens and contemporary planting schemes. The flowers are also attractive to pollinators and make excellent additions to cut flower arrangements.

Growing Agapanthus Inapertus Black Magic
Agapanthus Inapertus Black Magic thrives in a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil. For the best floral display, plant in full sun where the dark flowers can be appreciated against lighter planting companions. Container-grown specimens perform particularly well and allow plants to be moved to sheltered locations during periods of severe winter weather.
As a deciduous Agapanthus, the foliage naturally dies back in autumn before fresh growth emerges in spring. Remove spent flower stems after flowering and tidy away dead foliage once it has yellowed completely. Applying a mulch during winter can provide additional protection in colder areas and help maintain healthy growth year after year.
