National Hosta and Agapanthus Collection

Scroggy Wood is home to the National Hosta and Agapanthus Collection in Northern Ireland. The collection has been developed to preserve historic and rare cultivars for future generations while providing visitors with the opportunity to enjoy one of the largest Hosta collections in Ireland.
Supporting Scroggy Wood
Donations support the ongoing preservation and development of the collection. Contributions are shared between
Plant Heritage
(formerly NCCPG) and
The Royal Osteoporosis Society.
Remaining funds are invested directly into maintaining Scroggy Wood and expanding the National Collection.
It costs approximately £20 to acquire and establish each new Hosta added to the collection. In addition to Hostas, Scroggy Wood also contains collections of Agapanthus, Galanthus and ferns.
Volunteers are always welcome to assist with weeding, pruning, labelling, record keeping and general maintenance. If you would like to help preserve these collections for future generations, please

About the Collection
The collection currently contains over 1,000 different Hosta varieties planted throughout Scroggy Wood, with a further 500+ Hostas maintained in containers at the nursery. As the collection continues to grow, we actively seek older and historically important cultivars that are no longer widely available.
We would particularly welcome information regarding original Hosta cultivars associated with the late Hosta breeder and grower Eric Smith.
This was the first recognised National Hosta Collection in Ireland and we hope it will continue to grow and be enjoyed for many years to come.

Members of our family have been affected by osteoporosis, which is why supporting The Royal Osteoporosis Society remains an important part of this project. We hope Scroggy Wood will continue to be both a horticultural resource and a visitor attraction within the Glens of Antrim.
