Slugs and snails every garden has them but they are good food for wildlife our native wildlife is at threat as past 50 years due to over use of dangerous chemicals (Insecticides) ok chemials have there place and are needed at times.  The trouble is especially witrh slug control people put down slug pellets but instead of onbe or two pellets you tend to put them in piles next to the plant you want to protect.  This is totally overkill and harmfull to the environment and wildlife.  I do not know if you have noticedthe steady decline in Hedgehogs there main food is slugs and if they see dead slugs all together at these piles of pellets they will eat them and this kille the hedgehogs same for birds even cats and dogs eat slugs.  If you really want to use slug pellets then only use 3 at maximum in a shallow tray with a cover and only a small hole in the cover to let the slug in.  Place the traps around the boundary of your garden as this is where most of your slugs will be coming into your garden you want to catch them before they get into your lovely plants and vegetables.

The more Organic way is to use Garlic Spray see our recipe here  other methods is collect Oak leaves and spread them around your plants you are trying to protect slugs do not like Oak leaves.  Milk traps bury a small shallow jar in your garden put milk in the jar add a few drops of lemon juice this will make the milk go off and will attract slugs too it.  Make sure to put a cover over the trap to keep the rain out again just small holes arround the side of the cover. Or an easy method is to use a plastic bottle drill two holes in the side about half way up from bottom of bottle on on each side.  Now pour your milk and lemon juice into the bottle to fill just below the holes put the lid on again and bury the bottle in your garden up to the holes so as the holes are at soil level.  Now it is easy to lift out your bottle when slugs have fallen in and unsrew top and pour contents onto your compost heap.

Garlic is very usefull for all plants and totally safe you can mix chilli pepper powder to add more protection especially on plants that attract aphids (greenfly) like Lupins, Roses, Bedding plants and spring vegetables.  Calendula Marigolds plant them in your glasshouse and amongst your Roses this also helps to detract aphids.  Plant Astrantias near Hostas the slugs do not like the smell of the roots of Astrantia.  The marigolds will help attract more insects to your garden which in turn will help with pollination of your flowers and vegetables so plants will grow much better for you.

You can also plant garlic as a barrier in vegetable gardens around the boundary of your vegetable plot.
