How Do I Use Hostas as an Accent Plant?
Hostas make excellent accent plants thanks to their attractive foliage, compact growth habit and seasonal interest. Traditionally, accent plants were displayed alongside bonsai in Japanese tokonoma display areas, where they complemented the shape and character of the bonsai without overpowering it.
Today, Hosta accent plants remain popular with bonsai enthusiasts and gardeners who appreciate miniature plant displays. Their changing appearance throughout the seasons makes them ideal for creating attractive container arrangements.
Choosing Hostas for Accent Planting
Many perennial plants, grasses and bamboos can be used as accent plants, but miniature Hostas are particularly well suited. The best varieties naturally produce small leaves, compact growth and attractive flowers without requiring excessive pruning.
Ideal Hosta accent plants generally reach no more than 10–15cm (4–5 inches) in height and maintain their proportions when grown in small containers.
Accent Pots for Hostas
Choosing the correct pot is important when creating a Hosta accent plant. The pot should be large enough to accommodate the root system while remaining small enough to emphasise the miniature nature of the plant.
Many growers prefer handcrafted bonsai-style pots with glazes selected to complement the foliage colour of individual Hosta varieties. Small pots between 3 and 4 inches in diameter and approximately 2 inches deep are often ideal.

Cultivation Notes for Hosta Accent Plants
Hostas naturally die back during winter before producing fresh growth in spring. As the clumps mature they gradually increase in size, producing additional shoots each year.
Because Hosta accent plants are grown in small containers, they require a free-draining compost mix that retains moisture without becoming waterlogged. Repotting every two to three years is recommended, ideally during March as new growth begins to emerge.
A suitable soil mix consists of:
- 2 parts peat-free compost
- 2 parts horticultural grit
- 1 part Akadama or Seramis
If Akadama or Seramis is unavailable, use:
- 2 parts compost
- 3 parts horticultural grit
Hostas prefer partial shade but many yellow-leaved varieties develop their best colouring when given morning or evening sunshine.
Potting On Accent Plants
Before planting, cover drainage holes with mesh or sphagnum moss to prevent compost loss while maintaining good drainage.

Position the Hosta in the container and gently work compost around the roots. Use your fingers or a chopstick to remove air pockets without compacting the soil. Good drainage and aeration are essential for healthy root growth.
