A Evison/Poulsen cultivar introduced in 2002 for the bicentenary of Victor Hugo's birth. Very free flowering, violet coloured flowers 7- 8cm in size, with 4 -6 sepals and dark violet-tipped stamens. Vigorous growth with mature plants reaching to about 2.5 - 3m. It is non-clinging in habit. Though deciduous outdoors, the compound lanceolate leaves will only be lost for a short period of time. The plant will remain evergreen in protected conditions such as conservatories. It flowers freely for up to three months from the terminal growth. An ideal plant for growing with climbing roses, through wall trained shrubs and plants, or in association with low growing shrubs and flat spreading conifers. This unusual clematis with its somewhat “old world charm” blends perfectly with old style cottage garden plants.
