Historic Walled Garden & Tea Room

The Walled Garden at Glenarm is one of the oldest in Ireland, dating from the 18th century.  The first evidence we have of the garden layout comes in a description of the improvements carried out by the fourth Earl, Circa 1700-1720.  He made 'some gardens walled in and planted with good fruit trees and cascades and other improvements laid out in good taste.'  In the nineteenth century the present Walled Garden was created.  Its purpose was to produce the flowers, fruit and vegetables needed by the Antrim family, its guests, and numerous staff.  South-facing glasshouse with a coal-fired heating system were built for vines, peaches and nectarines along one wall, while the bothies on the north of the same wall housed tool sheds, potting houses and living quarters for junior and apprentice gardeners.  The head gardener's house overlooks this row of bothies.  The Walled Garden's character and its most important feature - the glass houses - have survived.  They still produce excellent grapes, peaches and nectarines.
It is situated in the grounds of Glenarm Castle, the ancestral home of the McDonnells, Earls of Antrim.
A 19th century Mushroom House has been converted into a charming Tea Room.
